Most People Don’t Fail—They Drift


You don’t wake up one day and decide to waste your potential.


It happens slowly.


You tell yourself you’ll start next week. Then next month. Then when things calm down. You stay busy, but nothing really changes. And after a while, you realise you’re in the same place you were a year ago.


That’s not failure.


That’s drift. It’s the process of staying where you are, and going with the flow, instead of intentionally choosing to move your life forward. 


The 10-80-10 Rule


Here’s the idea.


Some people start life with real challenges. Things they didn’t choose. Things that make everything harder. They are able to use those hardships as a foundation or “rock bottom” to jump off of and move their life forward.


Other people start with clear advantages. Support, resources, opportunities. They don’t have to fight to make it to the top because they were already placed there.


But most people?


80% of people are in the middle.


Not far behind. Not far ahead. Just… there.


And the real question isn’t where you started.


It’s what you’re doing now.


The Real Danger of the Middle


The middle doesn’t feel like a problem.


It feels normal.


It looks like saying you want more, but doing the same things every day. It looks like knowing what you should do, but putting it off. It looks like scrolling, waiting, avoiding, and telling yourself you’ll deal with it later.


Nothing feels urgent.


But nothing really moves either.


And if you go with the flow long enough, you don’t end up somewhere great.


You just end up wherever the current takes you.


Ask Yourself This: Am I Drifting?


Before anything changes, you have to be really honest about where you really are.

  • Am I actually moving forward?

  • Or am I just staying busy?

  • What’s one thing I’ve been putting off that I could do today?

  • If nothing changes, where does this lead?


That last question is the one that gets me the most.


I’ve learned that nothing changes if nothing changes. The secret isn’t to make BIG changes and expect your life doesn’t change all at once. It’s to change small things and do them consistently. That could mean starting a small, new habit OR stopping a small, old habit. 


Most importantly: STOP avoiding the changes that will change your life. 


You Don’t Have to Stay Where You Started


Where you begin can’t be changed. 


But it doesn’t decide everything.


Some of the strongest people are the ones who decide, “It stops with me.” They do things differently. They break patterns. They build something better than what they were given.


Why can’t that be you?

Why can’t you be the first in your family to break the patter?

Why can’t you be the one who rises above your circumstances to create a new life for you and the next generation?

Why can’t you be the one to stop drifting and leave the middle?


It can be. And it starts now!


How to Stop Drifting Through Life?


Leaving the middle doesn't take motivation. It takes an intentional choice. 


  1. Recognize where you are. And decide that it is not where you want to be.

  2. Paint a picture of your future life. What does it look like? What does it feel like? Some people do this by having a vision board while others just write down a goal.  Pick one thing you can start (or stop) doing today that will lead you to where you want to be in the future. Make it a habit and then pick a new small thing to work on.

  3. Decide right now to never quit. You won’t get to where you want to be by staying where you are. 


What Comes Next


Awareness is where it starts. But it’s not enough.


If you want to stop drifting, you need something practical. Something you can actually use day to day.
